Turnitin Alternative for Students: Check Your Paper Before You Submit
Turnitin is sold to schools, not to you. So what can you use to see your similarity score before your instructor does? On Oct 11, 2026, we read Turnitin’s own help pages and the database claims of six checkers you can buy, and put together what each one sees, what it costs and how to read the report.

Turnitin “does not sell individual licenses”; it is sold to schools, universities and organizations. Before you submit, you can only use it if your instructor allows resubmissions or your school has switched on Draft Coach. Other checkers compare your text with the web and published papers, but none of the ones we checked says it can see your university’s private repository of student papers, so no alternative can promise the same score. Use one as a second check, read the report carefully and fix what it flags. StudyTexter includes a plagiarism check and an AI-score check with every package, one-time from $79. You stay the author.
Why students can’t just buy Turnitin
Turnitin’s help center is clear: “Turnitin does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions.” Its similarity and grading services are sold “exclusively at the institutional level” to schools, universities and organizations[1]. Prices are not public; the product pages only offer a call with sales[5]. The Markup found contracts of $1.79 (CUNY) to $6.50 (UC Irvine continuing education) per student[6].
That leaves you with three routes before you submit:
- Through your instructorIf the assignment allows resubmissions, you can upload a draft, see the report and upload a new version. If resubmissions are turned off, your first upload is final.
- Draft Coach, if your school has itAn add-on for Google Docs and Word with three similarity checks while drafting. These checks do not add your paper to Turnitin’s database.
- iThenticate, on your ownTurnitin’s checker for researchers: $125 for one manuscript up to 25,000 words, $300 for up to three manuscripts or one up to 75,000 words. AI detection is not available on these plans.
- Another checkerCompares your text with the web and published papers. None of the checkers we looked at says it can see your university’s student paper repository.

What each checker sees
A plagiarism checker can only find what is in its database. That is the main reason scores differ between tools. Here is what each vendor says it compares against:
| Checker | Web | Publications | Student papers | Price (USD) and free use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turnitin[5] | current and archived pages, 20+ years | premium articles in 170 languages | yes, “repository of student papers” | schools only; free for you if your school licenses it |
| iThenticate[2][13] | 99.3 billion pages | open-access and major publishers, no count | not mentioned | $125 / $300; no free version |
| Scribbr[11][12] | 99.3 billion pages | 8 million publications | no, “can’t access” | $19.95 to $39.95 per check; free risk estimate with top sources |
| QuillBot[14][15] | “billions” of sources (via Copyleaks) | not mentioned | not mentioned | $8.33 / mo billed annually; free plan shows no reports |
| Grammarly[16][17] | over 16 billion pages | ProQuest databases | not mentioned | Pro $12, billing period not shown; not on the free plan |
| Copyleaks[18][19] | web sources | 16,000+ open-access journals | “1M+ internal documents” (not stated what they are or if personal plans include them) | $16.99 / mo; free start, limit not stated |
| Quetext[20] | “billions” of pages | yes, no count | not mentioned | from $14.99 / mo; 1,000 words free |
This is how Quetext’s pricing page shows the price and free limit from the table:

- 1Free: $0 a month, the DeepSearch plagiarism checker and the AI detector each “Up To 1,000 Words”.
- 2Essential: $14.99/mo for 100k words a month, plagiarism and AI checks included.
- 3Monthly or Yearly: the page opens on “Monthly”. The price in our table is the monthly price shown here.
- 4Currency: US dollars selected; the menu also offers AUD, GBP, CAD, INR and EUR.
Screenshot of quetext.com/pricing, Oct 12, 2026, 03:58 UTC, taken by StudyTexter from a browser set to US English. Cropped only; the numbered marks are ours[20].
Scribbr says it is an authorized Turnitin partner that uses Turnitin’s technology and has access to “most content databases”[12]. Scribbr also states openly that universities may check against “private student paper databases, which Scribbr can’t access”[11]. Apart from Turnitin itself, no checker in the table says it can access those repositories.
Grammarly’s plans page shows the Pro price without a billing period:

- 1Free: $0 USD a month. The Free list has no plagiarism check.
- 2Pro: “$12 USD”, struck through next to “Try for free” and a 7-day free trial (“$0 payment today”). The card shows no billing period.
- 3Plagiarism check: “Detect plagiarism and AI generated text” is listed under Pro.

What it costs to check one paper
The price depends on how long your paper is and how often you want to check it. Scribbr charges per check, iThenticate per manuscript with revisions included[11][2]. If you still need to write the paper, StudyTexter includes the checks with your draft.
What Turnitin’s AI check does and does not show
If your school uses Turnitin’s AI writing indicator, these rules apply. Turnitin publishes them in an FAQ, last updated on Oct 7, 2026[7]:
Turnitin itself says the score “should not be used as the sole basis for action”[7]. For you, that means: no outside tool can show you Turnitin’s AI score. What you can do is write and revise in your own words, keep your notes and sources, and run an AI-score check as a second opinion before you submit. StudyTexter includes one with every package.
How to read a similarity report
Whichever checker you use, read the whole report; the headline number is just the starting point. This checklist follows Turnitin’s own guides[8][9][10]:
- The score is a share of matching words. It shows how much of your text matches sources in the database. It is not a verdict.
- Matches are not plagiarism by themselves. “Highlighted matches are instances of text similarity; they do not always indicate plagiarism.”
- A low score is no guarantee. Turnitin says it “does not guarantee the absence of plagiarism”, and it names no acceptable percentage.
- Go through the match groups. “Not Cited or Quoted” needs a citation or rewriting. “Missing Quotations” may need quotation marks. “Missing Citation” needs a source. “Cited and Quoted” only needs a format check.
- Look at your bibliography and quotes separately. Reference lists and quotations match by nature; instructors can exclude them.
- Your own filters are temporary. Exclusions you set as a student “will not reflect your official similarity score”.
- Ask about the rules. Your instructor sets the databases and decides what counts. When in doubt, ask before the deadline.
Our sample test
We will run one paper through StudyTexter’s check and two checkers with a free version and publish the results here with screenshots and dates. Until then, this page makes no claim about which checker finds more.
- Sample. A 3,000-word social science paper with 10 quoted passages, 5 paraphrased passages and 3 sentences copied from public web pages without citation.pending
- Run. The unchanged file through StudyTexter’s plagiarism check, Quetext (free) and Scribbr (free version) on the same day.pending
- Record. Overall score, which of the 18 marked passages each tool finds, and the sources it names.pending
- Read. Each report checked against the reading checklist above.pending
Results will be added with date. If you spot an error on this page, tell us and we’ll correct it and date the change.
Where Turnitin is the better choice
Use Turnitin if …
- your school offers it: it is the reference your instructor actually uses
- your instructor allows resubmissions, so you can check drafts for free
- your school has Draft Coach in Google Docs or Word
- you need the student paper repository, which no other checker we looked at says it can access
- you are a researcher who can buy iThenticate for one manuscript
Use StudyTexter if …
- you still need to write the paper and want a guided draft
- you want sources selected for you and shown with page numbers
- you want a plagiarism and an AI-score check on that draft before you submit
- you would rather pay once than buy checks one by one
- you want to see your proposal draft before you pay anything
Either way, you stay the author. Check your university’s rules on AI tools before you submit.
How StudyTexter works
StudyTexter is made by acadeo GmbH. You build your paper in 12 steps, from a one-sentence topic to an exportable draft. Steps 1 to 5 are free and end with your proposal draft, the first version of your research proposal, with topic, problem statement, research question and outline. The literature search starts at step 6 with a package, and the plagiarism and AI-score check are part of it.
Topic in your words
Describe your topic in your own words. One sentence is enough to start.

Turnitin alternative FAQ
Can students buy Turnitin?
No. Turnitin says it “does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions” and sells only to institutions. Individuals can buy iThenticate, Turnitin’s checker for researchers: $125 for one manuscript up to 25,000 words, without AI detection.
How can I check my paper on Turnitin before I submit?
Only through your school: if your instructor’s assignment allows resubmissions, or if your school has set up Draft Coach in Google Docs or Word, which gives you three similarity checks and does not store your draft.
Is there a free Turnitin alternative?
Several checkers have free versions with limits: Quetext checks 1,000 words for free, Scribbr gives a free risk estimate with top sources. QuillBot’s free plan shows no plagiarism reports. None of them says it can see your university’s student paper repository.
Will another checker give me the same score as Turnitin?
Not reliably. Each checker compares against its own databases, and your instructor chooses which Turnitin databases apply. Use another checker to find passages you need to cite or rewrite, not to predict the exact score.
Can students see their Turnitin AI score?
No. Turnitin says the AI writing indicator and report “are not visible to students”. Scores from 1 to 19% are shown only as *% to avoid false positives, and the check needs at least 300 words.
What similarity score is acceptable?
Turnitin does not name one. Matches are not plagiarism by themselves, and a low score does not prove there is none. Ask your instructor or check your program’s rules.
Method and disclosure
We read websites, terms and reviews ourselves, back every number with a source and access date, and only add test results once we have them. Found a mistake? We correct it with a date.
On Oct 11, 2026 we read Turnitin’s help center and guides on licenses, resubmissions, Draft Coach, AI writing detection and the Similarity Report, iThenticate’s pricing and database pages, The Markup’s report on Turnitin contracts, and the product and pricing pages of Scribbr, QuillBot, Grammarly, Copyleaks and Quetext. Every checker in the table is sold by the vendor that describes it, so all database figures are vendor claims. We did not create accounts. We could not read Reddit threads on this topic, so we do not cite them.
StudyTexter sells a guided draft with a plagiarism and AI-score check, so we have an interest in this topic. That is why we back every statement with a source and date and say openly where Turnitin is the better choice. Turnitin is a trademark of Turnitin, LLC; we use the name only to describe the product. If you find a mistake, we’ll correct it and date the change.
Changes: Oct 11, 2026 first version; the same day, term aligned with the app (proposal draft). Oct 12, 2026: real, dated screenshots of Quetext’s pricing page and Grammarly’s plans page added; prices and free limits unchanged.
