Gemini for Students: Who Gets the Free Year, and What It Means for Your Thesis
Gemini for students is free for a year, if you qualify. But “Google AI Pro free for students” is only true in the US. On Oct 11, 2026, we read the fine print on all 174 regional versions of Google’s student page, the offer terms and the help center, and turned them into a checker: which plan you get, what you pay after, and whether the free year lasts until your deadline.

Yes, if you qualify. Google gives college and university students 18+ one paid plan free for 12 months. In the US it is Google AI Pro (then $19.99 a month); in over 140 markets, including the UK and Australia, it is Google AI Plus (then £4.49 or A$7.99 a month). Canada is excluded right now. Redeem by Dec 31, 2026, verify through SheerID and add a card. It is a great study tool. For a thesis you still need academic sources you have checked, a page number for each citation and your citation style. Gemini for students: who gets which plan
Google launched its new student offer on Aug 19, 2026: “one year of a Google AI plan free of charge for eligible college students around the world”[7]. The word “plan” matters. Students in the US get Google AI Pro. Students in over 140 markets, including the UK and Australia, get Google AI Plus, a smaller plan with 2x instead of 4x higher usage limits and 400 GB instead of 5 TB of storage[7][2]. There is no student offer in Canada right now[5][4].
Many guides still say “Gemini Pro free for students” for everyone. That was closer to true in 2025, when Google One offered a Google AI Pro student trial[6]. Today the plan you get depends on the country of your university, as the offer terms put it[5].

The Canadian version of the page has no offer section at all. Its FAQ asks “What happened to the previous student offer?” and answers that it ended on December 9, 2025[4].

Before you sign up, know what you already have. The free Gemini plan includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gemini Notebook, Google’s research and writing assistant[8]. The student plan mainly gives you higher usage limits, better models, more storage and video generation[8][1][2]. Google also notes that student usage limits may differ from paid plans and can change without notice[5].

How to claim it, and who can’t
You claim the offer at one.google.com/ai-student: sign in, pick the student offer, verify through SheerID, then finish the sign-up with a payment method[6]. Four things decide whether it works:
One more detail for people who had the 2025 offer: if your old AI Pro student trial has expired, you can claim the new one[1][2]. If it is still running, Google says you may get a limited-time discount on regular plans when it ends[6].
Is there a Gemini student discount after the free year?
Outside the US, Canada, Albania, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia, Google’s help center lists two more student offers: a discounted Google AI Pro plan “while you remain a student, for up to 4 consecutive years”, and Google AI Pro bundled with YouTube Premium[6]. The help page shows no price; you see the offers after you sign in. For US students, the pages we read mention no discount after the free year: AI Pro renews at $19.99 a month[1].
What to do before your free year ends
The free year is easy to start and easy to forget. The offer terms describe what happens on day 366, so we turned them into a short plan[5]:

Gemini for your essay or thesis: task by task
Gemini is built for studying. Google says it is “designed to help you study more effectively”[1]. A thesis asks for something else in the end: sources you can show, a page number behind every citation and the citation style your department wants. Is Gemini free for students?
Gemini itself has a free plan for everyone, and it already includes Deep Research and Gemini Live. On top of that, Google gives eligible college students 18+ one paid plan free for 12 months: Google AI Pro in the US, Google AI Plus in over 140 markets outside the US. You must redeem by December 31, 2026, verify through SheerID and add a payment method.
Is the Gemini student offer Google AI Pro or AI Plus?
It depends on where your university is. Students in the US get Google AI Pro (then $19.99 a month). Students in the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, India, the Philippines and most other markets get Google AI Plus (then £4.49, A$7.99 or the local price). Google’s offer terms say the plan depends on the country of your higher education institution.
Can students in Canada get Gemini for free?
Not right now. Google’s offer terms exclude Canada, along with Albania, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia. Google’s Canadian student page says the previous student offer ended on December 9, 2025. The regular free Gemini plan still works in Canada.
Is there a Gemini student discount after the free year?
In the US, not on the pages we read: after 12 months, AI Pro renews at $19.99 a month. Outside the US (except Canada, Albania, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia), Google’s help center also lists a discounted Google AI Pro student plan for up to 4 consecutive years and a Google AI Pro bundle with YouTube Premium. Google does not show the price on that page; you see the offers after you sign in at one.google.com/ai-student.
What happens when the free year ends?
Your card is charged the standard monthly price for your plan, unless you cancel before the offer period ends (or your local law requires your consent first). If you cancel during the free year, Google says your membership may stay active until the end of it. If your Google storage is over the free limit by then, you cannot save anything new until you delete files or pay.
Can I use Gemini to write my thesis?
Gemini is strong for understanding readings, quizzing yourself and getting feedback on your own text. For a thesis you also need verified academic sources, a page number for each citation and your required citation style. Google’s student and plan pages we read do not mention page numbers or citation styles, and Google’s own footnote says “Check responses.” Check your course’s AI policy either way; you stay the author.
Is ChatGPT also free for students?
Until October 31, 2026, OpenAI offers students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions four free months of ChatGPT Plus (then $20 a month, verified through SheerID). After that date, check OpenAI’s help center for a new offer. Gemini’s offer runs longer (12 months) and is available in many more countries.
