Paperpal Review 2026: Is It Worth It for Students?
Paperpal is built to polish academic English. Whether it is worth paying for depends on where you are in your paper. We read the pricing page in both billing views, the tool pages, the terms and the data security page on Oct 11, 2026, and mapped which steps of a paper Paperpal covers.

Contents
Paperpal is an academic writing assistant from Cactus Communications (Singapore). It edits language, checks plagiarism and AI likelihood, finds references and generates outlines and abstracts. It says itself that it “will not write the entire content for you”. Prime costs $25 a month billed monthly or $144 a year; Pro $59 or $348. There is a free plan. If you already have a draft in English, Paperpal is built to edit it. If you still need to get from topic to draft, StudyTexter guides you to a complete draft with real sources, plagiarism and AI-score check included, one-time from $79. You stay the author.
The short version
Paperpal is built for one thing many students and researchers struggle with: making academic English read well. It sits inside Word, Google Docs and Overleaf, suggests language edits, checks consistency, finds references and runs plagiarism and AI checks[1]. Effortless Academic, which promotes a discount code, describes it as particularly good for editing text you want to publish[12].
What Paperpal does not do is take you from a topic to a paper. Its own page says it “will not write the entire content for you”[3]. So the question is less “is Paperpal good?” and more “where are you in your paper right now?”.

Where Paperpal fits in your paper
A paper has more steps than editing. We mapped the steps of a typical student paper against what each tool says it does. Paperpal’s column only includes features listed on its own pages[1][3][4][5][6][7][10].
| Feature | ![]() | ![]() |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Topic and research question | not mentioned | steps 1 to 5, free |
| 2. Outline | generates outlines, also from your notes | outline in your proposal draft |
| 3. Finding sources | reference finder (“250M+” or “300M+” articles, both on its pages) | 479M+ sources, you accept or reject each |
| 4. Writing the draft | suggestions on text you write; “will not write the entire content” | complete draft in up to 2 hours |
| 5. Language editing | core feature, tailored to academic text | you revise the draft yourself |
| 6. Citations and bibliography | 10,000+ styles; automatic bibliography from Prime | 2,800+ styles, page numbers in the Evidence View |
| 7. Plagiarism check | 7,000 words free a month, more on paid plans | included |
| 8. AI-score check | 5 free scans a day, more on paid plans | included |
| 9. Journal submission | journal fit and pre-submission checks | not part of the workflow |
The pattern is clear. Paperpal is strongest at steps 5 to 9, once text exists. StudyTexter is built for steps 1 to 4, getting to a full draft with sources, and includes the checks at the end.
Paperpal pricing and the free plan
The pricing page opens in the annual view with a “Save 52%” badge. That is where $12 (Prime) and $29 (Pro) a month come from. Billed monthly, Prime is $25 and Pro $59[1]. Educators Technology reports the same prices, checked in September 2026[11].
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Plagiarism check | Other limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | up to 7,000 words a month, short report | 200 grammar edits a month, 5 uses a day of paraphrase, translate, research Q&A |
| Prime | $144 a year ($12 / mo) | $25 / month | 10,000 words a month | 20,000 edits, 500 uses a month of paraphrase, research Q&A and similar tools |
| Pro | $348 a year ($29 / mo) | $59 / month | 30,000 words a month | unlimited edits and AI detection |
| Prime, multi-year | 2 years $229 or 3 years $289, paid once | – | as Prime | “No auto-renewal” |
One detail: the Prime card lists AI detection at 25,000 words a month; the comparison table on the same page says unlimited[1]. If AI checks matter to you, confirm the limit before you pay.
For students, the useful question is how much checking you need. The plan cards list the plagiarism allowance for each plan:

- 1Monthly view: Prime $25 and Pro $59, “Billed monthly”. The page opens in the “ANNUAL” view with “Save 52%” ($12 and $29 a month).
- 2Free: “Lite Report Plagiarism”. The plagiarism checker page sets the free limit at 7,000 words a month, with the overall score and top 3 sources only.
- 3Prime: “10k words / mo Plagiarism”, plus 25k words a month of AI detection on this card.
- 4Pro: “30k words / mo Plagiarism” and unlimited AI detection.

Can Paperpal write for you?
Paperpal has generative features, but it draws a clear line:
- What it generates: outlines, titles, abstracts, keywords, summaries and study highlights through Copilot[4], and suggestions that continue text you have written[3].
- From notes to a first draft: the student page talks about turning “ideas into clear, submission-ready drafts”[10].
- What it does not promise: “Paperpal will not write the entire content for you.”[3]
- Sources: Educators Technology notes that predicted text is not automatically accompanied by a source[11].
Plagiarism and AI checks
Both checks are built in. The plagiarism checker compares against “99 billion webpages and 300+ million Open Access research articles”, according to Paperpal; which provider runs it is not mentioned[6]. The free version shows the overall score and the top three sources. The full side-by-side report is on paid plans.
The AI detector allows 5 free scans a day of up to 1,200 words. Paperpal says it reduces false positives by over 40% and adds that “no AI checker is perfect”[7]. That is fair: an AI score is a signal, not proof. Your university decides which checks count.
Ratings and user reviews
On Trustpilot, Paperpal has 4.7 out of 5 from 480 reviews[2]: 82% give 5 stars, 10% give 4 stars, 5% give 1 star. Trustpilot shows that Paperpal invites customers to review and has “replied to 100% of negative reviews”[2]. Of the 20 most recent reviews (Sep 19 to 26, 2026), 11 came from India.
The third-party reviews have their own commercial interests: Effortless Academic promotes a tracked discount code[12], Manusights sells its own pre-submission reviews[13]. Effortless Academic finds Paperpal particularly good for editing text you want to publish. Manusights concludes it pays off if you write regularly, less so for a few papers a year.
Renewal, refunds and privacy
- Auto-renewal: Prime and Pro renew automatically; you can switch it off under Membership & Billing. The 2- and 3-year Prime plans do not renew[1][9].
- Refunds: only for a first purchase, within 30 days for annual plans and 7 days for monthly plans. After that, none[1][9]. The pricing card says “100% money back guarantee” and names no time limit; the FAQ and terms set the 30 and 7 days.
- Pause: you can pause; the pause starts when the current term ends[1].
- Your data: Paperpal says your data “will never be used to train our AI models” and that it follows the GDPR. It holds ISO/IEC 27001 and 42001 certificates[8]. The general Cactus terms also allow Cactus to use uploaded source files to analyze and develop its services[9].
- Law and age: Singapore law and arbitration; the service is not intended for people under 18[9].
We summarize what the documents say as of Oct 11, 2026. This is not legal advice.
The multi-year Prime plans are the exception to auto-renewal:

- 12 years: “Pay $229 once”, shown as $9.54 per month.
- 23 years: “Pay $289 once”, shown as $8.02 per month.
- 3“No auto-renewal”: unlike monthly and annual Prime and Pro, these plans end on their own.
- 4Prime only: “not Pro”, according to the footnote.

How StudyTexter works
StudyTexter is made by acadeo GmbH. You build your paper in 12 steps, from a one-sentence topic to an exportable draft. Steps 1 to 5 are free and end with your proposal draft, the first version of your research proposal, with topic, problem statement, research question and outline. The literature search starts at step 6 with a package.
Topic in your words
Describe your topic in your own words. One sentence is enough to start.
Our chapter test
We want to compare what each tool does to the same chapter. The test needs a paid Paperpal account, so it is not done yet. Until we publish results with screenshots and dates, this page gives no verdict of our own on Paperpal’s editing quality.

Paperpal FAQ
How much does Paperpal cost?
On Oct 11, 2026: Prime $25 a month billed monthly or $144 a year ($12 a month); Pro $59 a month or $348 a year ($29 a month). Prime is also sold as a 2-year plan for $229 or a 3-year plan for $289, without auto-renewal. Prices shown in USD.
Is Paperpal free?
Yes, there is a free plan without a credit card: 200 grammar edits a month, 5 uses a day of paraphrase, translate and research Q&A, a plagiarism check of up to 7,000 words a month with a short report, and 5 AI-detector scans a day of up to 1,200 words.
Can Paperpal write my paper?
Not on its own. Paperpal says it “will not write the entire content for you”. It helps turn your notes into a first draft, generates outlines, titles and abstracts and suggests how to continue text you have written. StudyTexter guides you through 12 steps to a complete draft that you then revise.
Is Paperpal better than ChatGPT for academic writing?
They do different jobs. Paperpal is built for academic language editing, with plagiarism and AI checks and a reference finder. A general chatbot is more flexible for brainstorming. For a full draft with selected sources, a guided tool like StudyTexter fits better than either.
How do I cancel Paperpal and get a refund?
You can cancel any time in your account under Membership and Billing; the plan runs until the end of the period. Refunds apply only to a first purchase: within 30 days for annual plans and 7 days for monthly plans.
Does Paperpal use my documents to train its AI?
Paperpal says your data “will never be used to train our AI models”, on every plan including Free, and that it follows the GDPR.
Method and disclosure
We read websites, terms and reviews ourselves, back every number with a source and access date, and only add test results once we have them. Found a mistake? We correct it with a date.
On Oct 11, 2026 we read Paperpal’s pricing page in both billing views, its writing assistant, Copilot, reference finder, plagiarism checker, AI detector, student and data security pages, the Cactus terms of use, plus Trustpilot and three third-party reviews. We name the commercial interest of each review in the source list. We did not create an account. We could not read a Reddit thread from our research brief, so we do not cite it.
StudyTexter competes with Paperpal. That is why we back every statement with a source and date and say openly where Paperpal is the better fit. If you find a mistake, we’ll correct it and date the change.
Changes: Oct 11, 2026 first version; the same day, term aligned with the app (proposal draft). Oct 12, 2026: real screenshots of Paperpal’s pricing page added (monthly view and multi-year plan); prices and limits unchanged.
